My story…
Years ago, I was sitting on the floor outside a high school classroom, waiting for my history class to begin. My friend Pam was sitting there with me, and she showed me something she was working on for her art class. It was a small linoleum block, and Pam had carved it just enough that I could see the image of a dragon beginning to emerge.
I had never seen anything like it…

In fact, I had never even heard of a linoleum block print. But right there, as we sat in that dingy high-school hallway looking at a half-carved dragon, my heart started to race with excitement and joy. I wish I could tell you that I ran straight to the school counselor’s office and signed up for an art class. The truth is that many years went by before I finally signed up for a printmaking class at the local community college. But from the day I saw Pam’s dragon emerging from that linoleum block, I felt a spark of joy in my heart whenever I saw a hand-pulled print, and I’ve been following that trail of sparks ever since.
Much later, I learned that my grandfather, who was an architect by training, was also a gifted linocut printmaker. I’ve also learned that no matter what other, beautiful career paths I’ve followed, joy always leads me back into printmaking. I’ve practiced and taught printmaking in nature centers and libraries, in forests and fields, with children and adults.
Along the way, I’ve also taught folks of all ages to keep illustrated nature journals – the surest way I know to connect with the world around us, and a deep reservoir of images and inspiration for any kind of art we might feel called to make.
These days, I take to the trails every morning near my home in California’s Central Valley, making notes and illustrations in my field journal as I travel through the seasons of the year. Back in the studio, I use these sketches and notes to explore line, shape, color, and design in my work as a fine-art printmaker.
I make art because it helps me to bear witness to the healing currents of beauty and joy that are always running through the body of the world.
I make art to honor and speak on behalf of the wild lives and sacred places that have no vote and no voice.
I make art because people tell me that the images I create bring them back to the joy of their own sacred places and seasons.
I make my art because I hope it will inspire you to make our own…because this heals us all.
While drawing has always been the foundation of my art practice, I am most fascinated by printmaking: linocut, collagraph, and monoprint. All my prints are hand printed in my home studio. You can find them for sale here on my website, as well as at local art festivals and farmers’ markets.
I also love to teach printmaking to folks of all ages, along with collage, bookmaking, nature sketching, and other seasonal arts.
Please check the Events page of this website to see if there’s an upcoming workshop near you!
Or, even better, feel free to reach out to me if you’d like me to design an art playshop or custom retreat for a gathering of your friends or family members. I’d be very glad to design a custom art-making experience for your next gathering.
Here are some examples of art gatherings I’ve offered in recent years:
All-ages candle making (great for winter solstice or any birthday!)
Nature printmaking with leaves, flowers, and fruits
Bookmaking with various papers, covers, and bindings
Nature journaling and sketching for everyone (no previous experience necessary!)
Seasonal collage workshops for inspiration and reflection
